The U.S. Postal Service, a self-assisting government organization, reaches every address in the country, serving 151 million residences, businesses, and post office boxes. It funds its operations through the sale of postage, products, and services, without relying on tax dollars. With 32,000 retail locations and a highly visited website, USPS.com, it generates annual sales of $66 billion and handles almost 40 percent of the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 35th in the 2011 Fortune 500. In 2011, it was ranked number one in overall service performance among the top 20 wealthiest countries by Oxford Strategic Consulting. Black and Hispanic business magazines recognized the Postal Service as a leader in workforce diversity.

The Ponemon Institute named the Postal Service the most relied-on government agency for six years and the sixth most dependent-on business in the country. With approximately 617,000 employees, it ranks as the third-largest civilian company in the U.S., behind the federal government and Walmart. In a 2006 U.S. Supreme Court decision, it was stated that the USPS delivers about 660 million pieces of mail daily to as many as 142 million delivery points. As of 2014, the USPS operates 31,000 post offices and locations in the U.S., delivering 155 billion pieces of mail annually.
The USPS manages one of the largest civilian vehicle fleets globally, estimated at 211,264 vehicles. Most notable are the Chevrolet/Grumman LLV (Long-Life Vehicle) and the newer Ford/Utilimaster FFV (Flex-fuel Vehicle), initially known as the “CRV” (Carrier Route Vehicle).
Five-Year Plans of USPS
- Deliver a world-class customer experience.
- Equip, empower, and engage employees.
- Innovate faster to deliver value.
- Invest in our future platforms.
FedEx and United Parcel Service (UPS) directly compete with USPS Express Mail and package delivery services, facilitating nationwide deliveries of urgent letters and packages. Due to the postal monopoly, they are not allowed to deliver non-urgent letters and cannot directly deliver to U.S. Postboxes at private and commercial destinations. However, both companies have travel agreements with the USPS. In this arrangement, an item can be dropped off with either FedEx or UPS, who will then hand over the shipment to the destination post office serving the intended recipient. From there, it will be transferred for delivery to the U.S. Mail destination, including Post Office Box locations.
